Stop Debt: Phase 1 of Wealth Building, Stop Money Working Against You
Podcast ClipsStop Debt! Building wealth is a journey, and like any journey, it starts with a single step. For many people, that first step is often the most daunting: getting their finances under control. This is what I refer to as “Phase 1” of building wealth—stopping money from working against you.
In today’s economy, it’s easy to fall into the trap of debt. Whether it’s credit cards, car payments, student loans, or other financial obligations, debt can quickly spiral out of control. The harsh reality is that when you’re in debt, your money isn’t working for you—it’s working against you. Instead of growing your wealth, you’re losing it to interest payments, fees, and other financial drains. So it is important to stop debt working against us.
If you find yourself in this situation, it’s crucial to recognize that you can’t just hope for things to get better on their own. A proactive approach is essential. This means making a plan to tackle your debt head-on. There are various strategies to stop debt growing and help with this, two of the most popular being the snowball and avalanche methods.
The snowball method focuses on paying off your smallest debts first, which can give you a psychological boost and build momentum. As you pay off each debt, you roll the money you were paying into the next smallest debt, creating a “snowball” effect. The avalanche method, on the other hand, targets debts with the highest interest rates first. This approach saves you more money in the long run because it reduces the amount of interest you pay over time.
While the Self-Unemployed podcast will not focus exclusively on debt management, there are many excellent resources available for those looking to tackle their debts. Financial experts like Martin Lewis and Dave Ramsey offer great advice and tools for managing and reducing debt. As you embark on this journey, I recommend seeking out these resources and even consulting with a financial advisor if possible.
The key takeaway from Phase 1 is that you must be deliberate and disciplined in your approach. Financial freedom starts with getting out of debt and stopping money from working against you. Once you’ve achieved that, you can begin to move forward, making your money work for you instead.
In future episodes of the podcast, we’ll dive into the other phases of building wealth, bringing in expert guests to share their insights and strategies.
